The scene of diffused bombs and modern weaponry around them looked completely alien to Payton in such a place. He hated it, and he almost felt like he should probably be a lot better with it than others, but he wasn't. His understanding of technology, and what made a spirit angry and lingering made this situation incredibly uncomfortable, and the lack of angry spirits made him feel even more so.
Some had gone off to investigate the machinery, some had gone to talk to the people in the castle beyond. Payton chose to stay with Jean, right where they were. It wasn't a good place to keep him, and he was going to help Jean navigate up the steps, but it was going to take some time, and Payton wasn't the healthiest individual himself. He knew he probably shouldn't push himself, after what he had just experienced running after Keelin, but frankly, Jean needed the help. That ink that had been thrown in his eyes had blinded him somehow.
That was what got Payton nearly shaking with anger. How dare she?
He had already patted Jean on the shoulder and had specified that he was going to help, so Payton helped guide Jean's hand to Payton's shoulder. "Alright, careful. I'm going to place my hand on your other side, alright? There's steps here, so be sure not to take too big of steps, and just take your time."

Jean was angry, he was upset. At everything. These people, this world, that Merric... himself. Nothing prepared him for this, there was no way TO prepare. Instead all the man got was a sudden situation where his badge was as useful as an empty gun. And even that, he now could use the gun, but it was locked away for being forbidden technology.
And now to top it off, Jean was blinded.
He had no idea why... maybe it was to spare him from who this group sacrificed so easily. Or maybe it was punishment for his arrogance... thinking that he had any kind of authority in a world where the FBI was as powerful as the fishermen.
It was humiliating, it was upsetting, but Jean had no choice, nodding his head to Peyton as the young boy helped him through. He took small steps, hoping that by doing so, he wouldn't knock into anything. But at the same time, someone who was good at range was pathetic if he couldn't see.
Jean's usefulness had come to an end.
"Thank you. It was probably a good thing they chose you. I'm still upset, but at least the Clan Leader can see."

A grunt came out of the boy at Jean's words. The movement was slow, almost painfully so. Payton seemed to have stiffened a bit when Jean made his comment, but otherwise, no sound came out of him. There was only the dark, and no other way to perceive the outside world than Jean's feet.
"No, it isn't. If you had been leader, you would've made a call, and I'd be the one with ink in his eyes." Payton replied with a bit of gruffness in his voice. He sounded... angry. Livid, even. But he kept it well bottled, despite the day that they had been having. It was barely noon, and already the day had proven to be stressful to say the least.
"Watch your step." Payton commented, and he pressed on Jean's left side to try to signal him around.

"We don't know that, Peyton. What happened happened, and right now they'll need you more than me-" he said, as he hit a step and nearly lost his balance. He cursed, and then shook his head.
"I screwed up, I see that now. But promise me, Peyton, than you will look beyond your immediate goals. You need to see the bigger picture. That's where the truth lies." he said, walking with the boy up the stairs.
"Especially now, since it looks like I'm leaving before you are, kid."

Payton made a sound of disgust. "No you're not gonna leave before I do, don't say stuff like that. We'll figure out what's going on with you and we'll do our best to try to fix it, alright? Jeez." He seemed to ignore the lecture that he had received, but knowing Payton, he was likely putting it to the back of his mind to stew over it later.
The silence was deafening, before finally, Payton spoke again. "Damn her... I don't deal with people who fuck with my own." He growled under his breath.

Jean shook his head. The truth of the matter was that a blind man in a dangerous world was as useful as a drowsy driver. He can last for a while if lucky, but eventually if he isn't replaced, disaster follows. Jean wasn't liking the idea of having to survive blind in a world that wasn't stingy on the danger. He kept his mouth shut, however, as Peyton helped him up and in, finally reaching a table and letting the older man sit down and relax. Finally, something to give Peyton a break.
And then he said something interesting. "Her? Peyton, Merric is a male. Who are you talking about?"
